Snitch reveals L.A. lawyers quoted insurers for phoney ops
A criminal syndicate of 101 L.A. lawyers, office staff and their clients has been robbing honest Americans of the chance of a cheap car insurance quote, it has emerged. California state lawyers have revealed they defrauded motor insurance firms to the tune of $500,000 in two years. It was revealed that the guilty lawyers had been auctioning off injured victims of car accidents to chiropractic clinics for a cash payout. The clinics would then over-charge the victim's car insurance companies for invented treatments and appointments in addition to the genuine healing, netting them a fat profit. The extra insurance money was divided between the lawyers, clerical staff, chiropodists and victims, which was incentive enough to keep the scam under wraps for years. Eventually, however, an informant came forward complaining about the payouts, and in 2004 an undercover investigator started working for one of the clinics while they collected evidence necessary to expose the car insurance fraud. The huge number of defendants makes this one of the biggest motor insurance company fraud cases in California history. Handily for the few Californians not implicated in the court case, an extra $250,000 each year in car insurance firms' banks could lead to an unexpectedly cheap car insurance quote in 2007.
