TV exec who denounces drink drivers is one himself
Okay, so pretend you're a top television exec. in Australia. You're in charge of news and current affairs for the prestigious Seven Network, which hosts the popular but bafflingly-named 'Today Tonight' program. 'Today Tonight' is a current affairs show which regularly features - and mercilessly attacks - serial drink drivers. So what's about the worst thing you could possibly do, in terms of your reputation and that of the network? Peter Meakin (that's the guy we were pretending to be) committed his first drink driving offence in 2004. He was banned from driving for six months and fined AU$1450. Presumably his cheap car insurance premium wasn't so cheap any more. But clearly, he didn't learn his lesson. The 64-year-old's second offence - cops caught him nearly twice over the alcohol limit - occurred in October 2006. His licence has been suspended once again, and he's back in court. Once again, his motor insurance premium might well have gone up. "I accept that I've done the wrong thing," said Meakin of the case, "but the matter's a long way from resolved." "I wonder if he'll make a guest appearance on his own show," mused Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance specialists at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
