Ex-con young driver fronts Gloucestershire safety campaign

A 22-year-old ex-convict who spent 18 months in prison for drink driving is the face of Gloucestershire's 2006 Christmas road safety campaign.

Warren Passey was sent down in 2003 after an alcohol-fuelled RTA lead to the death of his friend, a back-seat passenger in the car he was driving.

"Not only do I have to live with the fact that I took a friend's life," he said, "but the plans I had for myself have changed. I now have a police record and I cannot have the career I hoped for."

Passey's conviction will also make it very difficult for him to find cheap young driver car insurance in future, as motor insurance firms impose heavily penalties on those with a drink-driving history.

"I hope that by sharing my story, I make other young people take the time to stop and think before contemplating drinking and driving," said Passey.

"The drink driving rate among young drivers is shocking," said Mike Page, spokesman for the experts on young driver car insurance at Hoot Car Insurance Services.

"I dearly hope Warren Passey's example will hit home with Gloucestershire young drivers this Christmas," he added.
