A fool from Cambridge will have a hard time explaining himself to his young driver car insurance provider after he ploughed bonnet-first into 2ft of raging flood water.
The man, who fully expected to cross the ford at Hinxton, outside Saffron Walden, was forced to abandon his Citroen Saxo when its engine cut out.
He waded to safety, leaving the car to be swept away in the torrent. It's currently floating about 60ft downstream, and police are refusing to send a recovery team until the water level subsides.
Staff at the driver's motor insurance company will doubtless ask why he ignored several signs warning motorists that the ford was impassable.
"We had a van stuck in the ford last month," said Jane Chater, chairman of the local parish council. "It does seem to happen quite frequently."
"The signs are clear but people think it doesn't look that deep," she added.
Hopefully, a few years of expensive young driver car insurance premiums should be enough to stop the man trying any more daring ford crossings in future.
