Classroom driving lessons for tomorrow's young drivers

Officials and driving instructors in Peterborough have been voicing their support for Government proposals to introduce basic driving lessons as a part of the National Curriculum.

It's hoped that getting a taste of driving theory in the classroom will curb the appalling number of car accidents and deaths on UK roads involving young people - and that could cut the price of car insurance for young drivers across the country.

"It's something which is missing from the classroom," said driving instructor Neil Franklin. "A few lessons about driving might make youngsters slow down, and a few shock films about crashes might also make them think a bit more."

Beverley Jones, Peterborough Council road safety team manager, hopes the proposals will lead to the expansion of existing educational projects.

"We already have a young driver programme set up," she said. "The team visits Peterborough schools and talks to pupils about driving skills, the dangers of drink driving and the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

"This programme is proving to be very successful, but by putting it on the National Curriculum it would allow us to visit more schools and educate more pupils."

"I'm in support of any scheme which will give teenagers a head start on their driving skills and increase awareness of the dangers on UK roads," said Hoot spokesman Mike Page, an expert on car insurance for young drivers.

"If these road safety classes are a success, the next generation of motorists will be more considerate and less accident-prone," he added, "and that could lead to cheaper car insurance for everyone."
