EU planners rip up road signs in German town
EU officials reckon they've put their collective finger on the source of accidents and vanishing cheap car insurance deals in the German town of Bohmte. The problem is traffic signs. Not that they're confusing, or badly placed; it's just that there's too darn many of them. "A rural town should look like a rural town and not like the Nuerburgring racing track" said Dutchman Hans Monderman, who is managing the 'Shared Space' project in Bohmte. At his bequest, every last road sign in the town has been ripped up, leaving local drivers with nothing but frayed wits and reflexes to protect them from a hefty motor insurance claim. "By removing the signs we raise awareness among road users for each other," argues Monderman, who has also drastically streamlined the highway code for Bohmte. Now it simply states that motorists must drive on the right, and give a right-before-left priority at junctions. "The less rules there are, the higher the risk of accidents, but it also means drivers take more care," he added, somewhat paradoxically. As yet, it's too early to tell if 'Shared Space' will lead to safer roads and cheap car insurance for Bohmte's 13,000 inhabitants.
