New research from Volvo Trucks suggests that drowsiness can be as great a risk to your cheap car insurance premiums as driving while under the influence.
According to the truck manufacturer, the effects of tiredness and drunkenness on a driver's performance can be 'remarkably similar' in many cases.
According to a Volvo spokesman, results of the study - which employed "real drivers in an authentic driving environment" - were unequivocal.
"We wanted our suspicions confirmed in a scientific study . so as to know with precision how a driver reacts both when drowsy and when under the influence of alcohol," he said.
Now Volvo is developing systems for its cars and trucks which will prevent a drowsy motorist from driving dangerously.
"Driving tired doesn't have nearly the same stigma as driving drunk, so it's alarming to know it can be just as dangerous," said Mike Page, spokesman for online car insurance firm Hoot Car Insurance Services.
"Hopefully the designers at Volvo can provide a solution which will safeguard drivers and their cheap car insurance premiums," he added.
