Cheap car insurance news - Petition demands tougher sentencing for young drink drivers

Bereaved Welsh parents have presented the Prime Minister with a 16,000 signature petition calling for harsher sentences for convicted drunk drivers, particularly those who have caused deaths.

Teenage and twenty-something drivers are statistically most often to blame where drink driving-related accidents are concerned, and young driver car insurance firms have responded by introducing steep mark-ups in the price of motor insurance quotes for those with a conviction.

But many people are surprised by the apparent lenience of judges when they come to sentence drink drivers in court.

One of the families behind the petition, the Palmers, lost their son Aaron to a 21-year-old drink-driver. They felt cheated when the man responsible for Aaron's death served just eight weeks in prison and was free of his driving ban in three years.

"I can see why the Palmers and the thousands of others who signed their petition feel let down by the justice system where drink drivers are concerned," said Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.

"Let's hope their signatures lead to the issue being resolved," he added.
