Uninsured young driver bought a car for 'somewhere to stay'

An 18-year-old has been banned from driving for three months after police in Northern Ireland found the car he had been 'living in' abandoned on the roadside.

When officers traced the car's owner and called him in for questioning, the man revealed that he held no drivers licence or young driver car insurance - but he qualified this by explaining that he'd been using the vehicle as shelter rather than a means of transport.

"I bought the car for somewhere to stay," he said. "I fell out with my father and was out of the house. I had to stay somewhere."

Based on his circumstances, magistrates decided not to impose the fines normally handed out to drivers without a licence or motor insurance - but that doesn't mean they consider his offences to be a trivial matter.

"There is no excuse for being on the road with no licence or insurance," he was told in court. "It is a serious offence."

The man has since patched things up with his father and moved back home - where he can live quite comfortably without young driver car insurance. Once the ban is lifted he plans to take up tractor driving.
