Drunk young driver batters bay window
A 21-year-old driver from Christchurch in Cambridgeshire has been banned from driving for 20 months by magistrates. David Theobald faces costly car insurance for young drivers after he crashed through a bay window in the nearby town of March, two days before Christmas. Theobald had spent the day eating, drinking and bowling with a group of older friends in Peterborough. Towards the evening he had begun to feel intimidated by their jokes, and when the party returned to the March train station Theobald bolted for the safety of his car. Ignoring the fact that he was drunk, Theobald gamely started up his Peugeot 306 and drove it into a large stationary obstacle: the bay window of a nearby terraced house. Amid ballooning airbags and a steadily growing crowd of angry and abusive onlookers, he grew intimidated once again and fled the scene. Police caught up to him in a town centre callbox, on the phone to his mother. Besides the driving ban, Theobald was fined £250. "I'm concerned for the folks whose window he crashed into," said Mike Page, Hoot Car Insurance Services spokesman and an expert on car insurance for young drivers. "Lots of families keep their Christmas trees in front room windows," he added, "and I'm not sure if Theobald's car insurance firm will be too happy about having to pay out for a set of new presents."
