Scottish spared speeding ban, letting him pay fines and young driver car insurance

A man caught speeding whilst on an errand for his mother faces five points on his licence and a substantial increase in his young driver car insurance premium.

The teenager, currently a student at Strathclyde University, was clocked doing 100mph on the M8 in June 2006. Paisley Sheriff Court heard that he was rushing to pick up his younger brother from school.

Usually, a speeding offence of this nature would be met with a six point penalty - but the Sheriff was moved to clemency when an agent explained this would result in a driving ban for the young man.

As a delivery driver, it was argued, he could lose his job and be unable to pay the £200 speeding fine that the court had imposed.

Mike Page, speaking on behalf of the young driver car insurance experts at Hoot, said: "It's not just a court fine putting pressure on this young driver's finances - the increase in his motor insurance premiums is going to be pretty steep too."
