Oak Tree Drive under siege by young driversOnce they've passed their driving tests and bought their first young driver car insurance, there's one road in the sleepy Devon town of Newton Abbot that new drivers will be careful to avoid. It's called Oak Tree Drive, and it currently plays host to around 50 learner drivers every day; practising junctions, manoeuvres and emergency stops from early in the morning until late at night. The newly qualified drivers aren't the only ones who want to give this oft-driven stretch of road a wide berth, however. It seems local residents are getting pretty sick of it, too. "It's almost a siege situation at times," said one. "Newton Abbot's got 30 or so driving instructors - each one with maybe about six pupils. Then there's five or six bike companies with maybe three pupils each. "Anyone just needs to look at the volume to realise it's too much." Besides the irritation of slow-moving learners delaying their journey home, locals regularly find themselves unable to use their own driveways because an instructor's car is blocking the entrance. "We all need to be patient with learner drivers," said Mike Page, one of the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot, "but the situation at Oak Tree Drive would surely stretch any driver's patience to breaking-point." "Luckily it doesn't sound like anyone's motor insurance has suffered as a result of these learners though."
