Cheap car insurance firm says a third of used car sales are illegalCheap car insurance company More Than has revealed that as many as one in three secondhand cars sold privately could be rendered worthless to the unfortunate buyer. With about 2.9 million such sales taking place every year, that equates to 1 million cars with adverse histories changing hands. The majority of these vehicles do not legally belong to the person selling them, usually due to outstanding finance agreements - which means they could be repossessed from the unfortunate buyer at any time. The rest are cars which pose a serious danger to their new 'owners'; so-called 'cut-and-shuts' and cars declared a write-off by motor insurance firms. "This is a serious problem," said a spokesman for More Than. "As well as the number that could be driving in stolen or unsafe cars, there are thousands who could get a knock on the door from a finance company threatening to take their car because of an outstanding finance agreement." To combat illegal car sales, the cheap car insurance firm offers a history checker service for secondhand cars. Using data held by credit agency Experian, this can confirm details such as ownership, mileage and even paint colour are genuine.
