Amex pollsters want stricter penalty for cheap car insurance dodgers

Increasing penalties for those without cheap car insurance was one of three top answers to Britain's driving problems, as suggested by participants in a recent American Express poll.

The financial services giant, which now offers motor insurance to customers in the UK, asked 1,000 people what they would do to improve conditions on British roads if they were Prime Minister for a day.

The top three suggestions were to increase police patrols, improve public transport and impose 'more severe penalties' for those caught driving without a licence, road tax or cheap car insurance.

"The uninsured driver poses a risk to every insured driver," said a spokesperson for American Express.

"Whilst many of our respondents felt that more severe penalties would help tackle the problem others suggested increasing fuel costs to include insurance coverage."
