Speed traps could end UK's cheap car insurance ratesA high-ranking police officer is calling for an end to speed camera signposting and the reintroduction of hidden speed traps on British roads. Giving drivers too much warning of an approaching fixed camera or radar gun unit gives normally dangerous drivers the chance to slow down and avoid detection, according to the chief constable of South Yorkshire Police. If adopted, the measures could see a drop in the number of road accidents and the loss of cheap car insurance for many of the reckless drivers who are presently able to avoid detection. "I have always thought it strange that speed cameras were so easily identified," he said, in an interview with the Times. "We need to think about . using technology in a less conspicuous way." "Public approval of speed cameras as a road safety initiative has fallen off considerably in the past few years, and car insurance companies are now tending to overlook speeding convictions as a measure of dangerous driving," said a spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services. "Taking steps to increase the yield of speed cameras would surely be massively unpopular in this climate of distrust and mounting frustration," he added.
