Father reports CIS over cheap car insurance policy wording
A family has spoken out over the confusing wording of a cheap car insurance policy which left them liable to pay out for the damage caused in a car crash. The father let his 20-year-old son drive his car to work one morning as his son's own car was in for repairs, assuming that he would be covered under his comprehensive car insurance policy with CIS. It even said as much on the motor insurance certificate. Unfortunately, they found out the hard way that this was not the case when his son was involved in an accident. The father explained: "CIS refused to accept third-party liability on the basis that the last sentence in the final paragraph of the small print of their policy document said that he was only insured to drive another vehicle in an emergency." He believes that the cheap car insurance company did not make this condition clear enough, although CIS claimed that it had clarified that the policyholder was covered to drive other cars only "in an unexpected urgent situation or sudden state of danger that requires immediate action." He reported CIS to the Financial Ombudsman, who found in his favour. He said: "The Ombudsman wrote to us and said that CIS should have made it crystal clear when the clause applied by emblazoning the wording on the first page of the policy document, and also by altering the wording on the certificate of motor insurance document."
