Holidaymakers return to find their car crushed

A London couple are seeking compensation after Lambeth Council impounded and then crushed their car whilst they were taking a three-week holiday.

The ill-fated car, a Mitsubishi Colt, was parked outside the couple's home in Streatham Common when they left for Australia in early March 2007.

A few days afterwards it was broken into and had the rear window smashed by burglars.

Zealous council workers then identified the Colt as a danger to the public. Although it had valid road tax, MOT and cheap car insurance, the car was speedily impounded.

The owners were sent a letter inviting them to come and collect their car, for a fee of £390. Then twelve days later - the day after the couple's return to UK - it was crushed.

"We are obviously seeking compensation for this incomprehensible situation," said the woman. "We are still in shock that this has been able to happen."

"Coming home to find your car's back window missing is bad enough, but it's infinitely preferable to finding the car's gone altogether," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot.

"Let's hope the couple's motor insurance will protect them from financial trouble," he added.
