UK motorists lose rights fight to save cheap car insurance

Two British motorists have lost the battle to overturn driving convictions which could rob them of their cheap car insurance premiums - despite going all the way to the European Court of Human Rights. The pair, from Petersfield, Hampshire and London, travelled to Strasbourg to protest what they felt were illegally-issued speeding tickets.

They claimed that UK law, which requires the owner of a car caught speeding on camera to identify the driver responsible, contravenes their rights to silence and protection from self-incrimination. However, judges at the hearing ruled that their human rights had not been affected, by a majority of 15 to two.

"This is a perverse decision and I am shocked and amazed," said one of the convicted drivers, who was fined and given points on his licence by magistrates back in the UK. He may also see the effects of his conviction in future motor insurance quotes, although the increasing number of people with points on their licence has meant that many cheap car insurance firms no longer put up premiums for drivers after their first speeding offence.

Commenting on the story, a spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services said: "With the proliferation of speed cameras and a vast increase in the number of convictions, speeding is seen as a relatively minor offence these days, particularly for a first time. But I think you've got to admire anyone with the conviction to protest a matter of principal, and go all the way to the top with it - even if that appeal turns out to be unsuccessful."
