Cheap car insurance firm rats out innocent driverCheap car insurance firm easyMoney has had a lot of explaining to do after letting the police believe that one of its paid-up customers was actually driving uninsured. As a result, the 32-year-old driver was without a car for several days when officers stopped him on the eve of the Spring Bank Holiday 2007 and seized what they thought was an illegally-driven vehicle. The car was impounded and the bewildered man, who had in fact been insured since April 2007, was issued with a £60 fine and five penalty points for his licence. Getting the car back, he was told, would cost a further £105 in towing charges, plus £12 for every day it had spent in the police impound yard. easyMoney has since refunded the fines and charges, and the penalty points have been removed from the man's licence, but he still feels somewhat bitter towards his car insurance company. "I was without my car for a number of days," he said. "I do not work and so I could not afford to pay the storage costs. The fact I am being penalised for keeping to the law is terrible." easyMoney, which was founded by easyJet creator Stelios Haji-Ioannou, promises to take the same "no frills" approach to cheap car insurance as its sister company takes to air travel.
