Drink driver loses cheap car insurance after committing first offence at 63A man with an immaculate driving history has ruined his cheap car insurance rate by getting behind the wheel of his car after a night of drinking. The 63-year-old had been out celebrating his birthday with friends in his home town of Whitburn, Sunderland. He had intended on getting a bus home, but after falling over on the way to the bus stop he instead decided to sit in his car and warm up. "After I'd fallen over, my face was all gashed and so were my hands, I only went back to the car to get warm," he said. Once he was behind the wheel, however, the temptation to try and drive home proved too great. Soon afterward, police spotted the man's car swerving from one side of the road to the other and pulled him over. A breathalyser test showed he was a staggering three and a half times over the legal limit. On his appearance at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court, the man was given a four-month suspended prison sentence, placed under an 8pm to 8am curfew and banned from driving for three years. On top of that, his motor insurance provider will have made significant changes to his previously cheap car insurance rate. "I regret what I've done but I've never done anything like that before," the man told reporters after his court appearance. "It was just a silly mistake and I've paid the price."
