Police 'hall of shame' adds to loss of cheap car insuranceStricter laws introduced in March 2007 mean that the offence of using a handheld mobile phone while driving now carries a penalty point charge, and thus can ruin a driver's cheap car insurance rate. If the thought of that wasn't enough to put you off, however, police in Merseyside have come up with another incentive not to make calls whilst driving - they're putting pictures of offenders up on their website and in the local press. Officers participating in "Operation Mobile Cam" use video cameras to film drivers breaking the law before stopping them to issue a £60 fine and three penalty points. Incriminating images from the footage are then displayed in an online 'hall of shame' on the force's site. "The whole aim of this operation is to reduce the number of people committing this offence and ultimately reduce road injuries and road deaths," said a police spokesman. "It is not about punishing motorists but reinforcing the message that using their phone when they are behind the wheel is a serious offence." Merseyside police have caught some 900 offenders since the new penalties were in force, but it's hoped that raising awareness through initiatives like Operation Mobile Cam will lead to fewer arrests in future. "A significant drop in the number of mobile phone use offences could theoretically lead to cheaper motor insurance rates for the whole region," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot.
