Post Office workers object to selling cheap car insurance
Many staff at the Post Office are unhappy with the way they have been forced into selling financial products alongside regular postal services. Confronting customers with the 'hard sell' over things like cheap car insurance and holiday cover could tarnish the Post Office brand, they say; and the time spent training for it means longer queues at the counter.
The changes have been introduced as part of a bid to revamp the Post Office, which has been hit by a number of financial setbacks in the past few years. According to a management spokesman, income generated by the new services is: "playing a key role in helping to offset a decline in Government benefits and other traditional business."
However, staff and the Communication Workers Union which represents them are said to be 'bitterly resentful' of the pre-prepared scripts they are now forced to read, and the army of 'secret shoppers' sent into Post Office branches to check up on them.
"I am sure customers hate being talked to like this," said one counter staff worker. "If we have to try and sell all these products, we are just not able to talk normally to our customers."
"The Post Office's cheap car insurance is reckoned to be some of the best around, and it's already well advertised on TV and in the press," said Mike Page, spokesman for the online car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
"I think this extra bit of marketing seems somewhat uncalled for - particularly if it's causing problems between management and staff."
