Increased recovery fees threaten cheap car insurance rates

New proposals for the recovery of stolen and broken-down cars could mean the end of your current cheap car insurance rate.

The Home Office recently announced plans to increase the fees for recovery and storage of such vehicles - steps it admitted would lead to a higher motor insurance premium for every driver.

The recovery charge for a car or motorbike is set to rise 45 percent from £105 to £150, and the cost of storage from £12 a day to £15. Many affected drivers decide to claim this money back on their car insurance, and when the fees go up, insurers will be forced to raise premiums across the board to compensate.

"Cars left in a way which causes an obstruction or danger to the public have got to be removed," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot.

"Perhaps increasing the fees will discourage people from abandoning these vehicles on UK streets - then the effect on car insurance premiums would be negligible," he added.
