American Peter Gilbert is proud of his extremely high annual mileage, despite the fact that it hinders his chances of getting a cheap car insurance quote.
For the past 17 years, the financial services salesman has clocked up a whopping 59,000 miles per year - that's roughly five times the national average (and five times the risk of a car accident, which explains why his motor insurance quotes are so high).
Why 17 years? Well, for one thing, 17 years ago is when Gilbert got divorced and, to make himself feel better, bought a new car. Also, 17 years is the amount of time that the car, a Saab 900, lasted him.
And lastly, 17 years times 59,000 miles makes a little over 1 million miles, or 1,001,385 to quote Gilbert's odometer.
It's a staggering figure considering few other cars make it past the 200,000 mile-mark.
Trustees at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum were so impressed with the achievement they offered to exhibit the car when he was finished with it.
Gilbert, who treasures the 900 like an elderly relative, said: "Before I took her to the museum, I had a full detail job done. It was the first time that her carpets were thoroughly cleaned in 17 years.
"She was like a bride getting ready for her wedding," he added, creepily.
Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot, said: "Gilbert certainly did well with the Saab, but I can't help wondering if 'she' may have hampered his chances with women in the years since his divorce."
"Cars are great, but they shouldn't take the place of a steady girlfriend," he added.
