Cheap car insurance customers receive payouts

It used to be cheap car insurance customers were the only drivers getting money back against their motoring expenses.

However, many victims of the contaminated petrol crisis of February 2007 are now receiving compensation money back from the supermarkets that supplied the fuel.

Thanks to figures released by Tesco and Asda, we know that at least 20,000 people made claims for engine damage caused by traces of silicon that had somehow made its way into a number of pumps across the South East.

Compensating those people cost the supermarkets more than £9 million, and that's not the full extent of the payouts. Morrisons, another of the affected chains, has refused to specify the value of claims made due to petrol bought at its stations - and Tesco still has outstanding cases to settle.

"We are 90 percent of the way through," said a Tesco representative. "The outstanding ones are where we are waiting for paperwork."

"The contaminated fuel incident was a nightmare both for motorists, motor insurance firms and the petrol suppliers," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance specialists at Hoot.
