biding motoring publicAbout a third of UK motorists are terrified of young drivers and are backing attempts for a major crackdown on youths' poor driving and car insurance record, according to a new motoring survey. A genuine fear of young drivers - with a scientific name, motoring ephebiphobia - is developing among the law-abiding motoring public. Tough action now called for includes demands for young people behind the wheel to have to display 'P' plates while driving during the first year after passing their driving test and tougher speeding penalties. Motorists polled said re-training should also be introduced, preferably under police instruction. Immediate disqualification from the road should be an option too, and night-time driving curfews should be imposed. And in the survey by windscreen repairers Autoglass - who work with car insurance firms - motorists also want young drivers to re-sit driving tests, as well as have them banned from cars with large engine sizes. Autoglass managing director Nigel Doggett said, "From our poll it is clear many drivers are afraid of young motorists and want to see restrictions put in place to help them gain valuable driving experience but with lower risk to themselves and others." Young drivers aged under 25-years-old are killed in more than 3000 traffic accidents each year - and the toll for injury accidents is even higher. During the summer time, some 9000 young people are killed or hurt on British roads. Road safety group Brake says teenagers aged 18 are over three times more likely to be in crashes than middle aged motorist, leading to much higher young driver car insurance rates.
