Given Ford is a manufacturer tied up with the American dream and the country's development as an industrial nation, it's hardly surprising to see that Fords have featured in many feature films over the years. Here's a Hoot Car Insurance Services guide to Ford on Film.
You can start with almost any American film or TV show with a school bus in it - that classic yellow bus is a Ford. My favourite example is the Simpsons Halloween episode that contains 'Terror at 3 1/2 Feet', which moves the classic gremlin Twilight Zone episode from an aeroplane to a school bus.
However, you're probably thinking of a classic Ford in a classic film. As a David Lynch fan, the first thing in my head is the black Thunderbird in Wild at Heart, but there are more famous films than this. Take Thelma and Louise - another road movie, and another Ford Thunderbird, this time powder-blue. Like most road movies, the car is so central to the film it's almost a character in its own right and, without giving away the final moments, its last scene burns the image of the car into the mind.
Or there's Starsky and Hutch. Hands up if you know which was which? And again if you remember what the car, a Ford Gran Torino, looked like? You can be almost certain that the second set of hands will be bigger. That white stripe on a red car is absolutely iconic, and seeing it crash through boxes pretty much defined the TV chase scene for years. Even in the remake, the car was one element they didn't dare to mess with.
The Ford Anglia is iconic in a different way - it's the car of choice in UK TV to suggest the past, or something old-fashioned. It crops up in Heartbeat and Life on Mars, and it's the car that's enchanted to let the heroes get to school in the second Harry Potter film. That car took its role so seriously that it vanished in 2005, only to be recovered in a ruined Cornish castle; they say it was stolen, but perhaps something from the film rubbed off.
That Anglia is now one of the cars featured in the Cars of the Stars museum in Keswick. Another that is displayed there is the Ford Falcon that Mad Max brought into the dystopian future imagined there, where it was fitted out with a supercharger, which is still not standard issue.
And what look at cinematic Fords would be complete without Greased Lightning, from Grease? Before it was customised to be, among other things, hydromatic, it was a Ford. People seem to argue about exactly what model, but it clearly deserves its place in this page.
