Police use laser guns to detect cars speeding. It is quite a new technology - a laser beam is much more precise compared to older radar guns. Police officers can target one car at a time and readings are very accurate.
There are drawbacks for the police - with the laser beam travelling very fast (the speed of light), a steady hand is required for laser gun use. If during, say, a fraction of a second burst a policeman moves his arm, the reading will be substantially wrong.
This makes sense - pointing a laser at the front bumper when a small arm movement sees the beam move to the car's bonnet is bound to affect the speed reading.
Police still more often prefer radar guns because they have proved to be 'just the ticket' - if you can forgive the pun.
A problem with radar guns is that they can perform badly in heavy traffic. This is because a radar gun beam spreads out, so detecting an accurate reading from one car can be error-prone.
Speed traps are also used where a set piece of road is used and police use a timer or video to calculate speeds.
Other detection systems include VASCAR, DS2 and Autovision.
