We want to make sure that you are all driving around safe and legal to keep those accidents and motor insurance premiums to an absolute minimum so read on for more details about lighting requirements:

According to the Highway Code, there are a number of musts and must nots concerning your headlights, fog lights and hazard lights:

Do

Make sure that all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise. (The hours of darkness are defined as half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise.)

Use headlights at night, especially if a road does not have lit street lighting.

Use headlights when visibility is significantly reduced, such as dull daytime weather.

Use dipped headlights in built-up areas at night to avoid causing glare and dazzling.

Keep headlights dipped when overtaking until you are level with the other vehicle and then change to main beam if required.

Slow down or stop if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights.

When stationary in traffic apply the brake once and then take your foot off the brakes to deactivate the brake lights to minimise glare for traffic behind.

Use hazard warning lights when your vehicle is stationary to warn that it is temporarily obstructing traffic.

Use main beam headlights on unlit rural roads at night when not following another vehicle and there is no oncoming traffic.

Don't

Use headlights to dazzle or cause discomfort to other motorists, cyclists, pedestrians or horse riders.

Use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is significantly reduced and switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling others.

Use hazard warning lights as an excuse for dangerous or illegal parking.

Use hazard warning lights while driving or being towed, unless on a motorway or restricted dual carriageway and it is necessary to warn drivers behind of an obstruction ahead. Only use them long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed.
