This latest Guide is about the Pass Plus driver training scheme.

What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a training scheme designed to broaden the experience and skills of newly qualified drivers.

Introduced by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) in 1995, it addresses the fact that motorists are more likely to crash during their first two years of driving than at any other time. The course is in many ways a supplement to the standard UK driving test and aims to 'fill in the gaps' in terms of experience that leave the majority of new drivers so vulnerable.

Pass Plus is administered by driving instructors who have trained and registered with the DSA for the purpose. If your driving instructor isn't Pass Plus certified (or you just fancy a change of face) check the Yellow Pages or a local newspaper for details of one who is, or ask at your nearest driving school.

Unlike learning to drive, there is no exam at the end of Pass Plus. Instead, you will be assessed by your instructor on a session-by-session basis. To pass, candidates must complete each one of the six modules which make up the course, either to an 'achieved' or 'exceeded' standard.

What Pass Plus teaches
The course is made up of six modules, each one tackling different driving skills and conditions. It's usual for each module to be taught during an hour-long practical session.

The first module, 'Town Driving', starts with an introduction to the course and its aims. The practical session which follows covers aspects of urban driving that many new drivers are not familiar with; complex junctions, public transport and others.

Module two, 'All-Weather Driving', teaches you how to handle a car in rain, snow, fog, bright sunshine and others, focusing on the correct speed and stopping distances under these conditions. A practical session will cover as many aspects of this module as the day's weather allows, with the remainder taught in theory.

'Driving Out of Town' focuses on the difference between city and country roads, and the driving style for each case. This module teaches you about hills, sharp bends and uneven road surfaces, besides how to deal with horses, farm vehicles and other rural hazards.

Module four, 'Night Driving', covers the correct use of headlamps, coping with dazzle and parking in the dark. It prepares you for driving at dawn and dusk, as well as at night.

Module five is 'Driving on Dual Carriageways'. Skills taught here include lane discipline, overtaking and joining or leaving the carriageway.

The final module is "Driving on Motorways", something few new drivers feel confident about. Instructors will make every effort to ensure this is a practical session, but when there is no local motorway it can be taught in theory. Drivers learn about slip roads, motorway signage, fatigue, crosswinds and more.

How much does it cost?
Like a regular driving lesson, the price of a Pass Plus session varies from instructor to instructor, and both tend to cost about the same money.

If you meet the required standard for each module at the first attempt, there is the potential to finish the entire course for the price of six sessions.

However, when candidates don't meet the 'achieved' standard for a particular discipline first time, they have to re-take before moving on. Each retaken module therefore adds to the overall price of the programme.

The benefits of Pass Plus
Besides boosting a new driver's confidence and ability, Pass Plus comes with another very welcome benefit: it helps you to get cheap car insurance.

A number of big name motor insurance firms currently participate in the scheme, and they offer substantial discounts for Pass Plus holders in recognition of their superior skills. In many cases, the discounted rate is 30 to 50 percent cheaper than the price of regular car insurance for young drivers, a saving which nicely offsets the price of tuition.
