Thatcham declares Audi the most secure car brand

Audi has been named the most secure brand of car at the 2007 British Insurance Car Security Awards. The car-maker beat runners-up Volvo and Volkswagen to scoop the prize.

However, the research body behind the awards was keen to stress that every manufacturer on the British market was doing its bit towards improving security. Figures from the Home Office have shown a dramatic 51 percent drop in vehicle related thefts since 1997, down to 1.7 million cases in 2005.

"Manufacturers are continuing to keep ahead of the criminal fraternity," said a spokesman for the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, otherwise known as Thatcham.

"Many car thieves are just having to give up, thanks to the industry's continued quest to drive down car crime."

"Along with safety features and fuel economy, security has become one of the most important considerations for today's car buyer," said Mike Page, for Hoot car insurance services.

"Audi could see a noticeable rise in sales after receiving this award."
