Cameras ruin motor insurance quotes for hand-held phone usersThose looking to avoid a costly motor insurance quote in future should avoid talking on mobiles whilst driving - even if they think they can't be seen. That's because police equipment that was designed to catch speeders is now being used in the hunt for phone-wielding motorists. Following the recent tightening-up of the law - which doubled standard fines to £60 and added three penalty points for offenders - the police have revealed that covert mobile camera units will be added to the roster of patrols already on the lookout for illegal phone use. "If officers using mobile cameras see someone using a hand-held phone, whether with their own eyes or through the lens of their camera, then they are fair game," said Meredydd Hughes, head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Constables. "Many UK drivers still aren't taking the law seriously enough when it comes to mobile phones," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services. "I don't like to see motorists facing convictions and missing-out on cheap motor insurance quotes for the sake of a phone call, but if these new penalties and policing methods save lives then it's all worth it," he added.
