Link between education and motor insurance quote prices investigated
The Florida State Insurance Commissioner is investigating whether a driver's profession and education should affect the price of their motor insurance quotes.
Although not all car insurance companies in the state do use employment and education as factors in determining how much a driver should pay for their motor insurance, there are a minority that do.
These companies provide dramatically different motor insurance quotes for drivers with manual lines of work and with a lower level of educational achievement than high-flyers with prestigious jobs.
The State Insurance Commissioner gave an example where car insurance quotes were sourced for both a mechanic without a high school diploma and an engineer with a doctorate degree. The two fictional motorists had identical driving records and were both aged 23.
The mechanic was given a motor insurance quote for $4,225.36, which is more than three times more than the engineer, who would have to pay just $1,403.59.
According to one Florida car insurance company, education and job-type do affect a motorist's risk and this is simply reflected in the motor insurance quotes found by the researchers. However, it also argues that a more prestigious job and higher level of education does not necessarily mean that a driver will be able to get cheap car insurance.
Despite this, the State Insurance Commissioner is questioning whether it is "appropriate to rate a janitor 300 percent of what you'd rate an engineer or doctor."
