Crackdown on youngsters without insurance
Police in North Somerset have launched a crackdown on young people causing a nuisance on motorised vehicles, and in particular those without insurance.
Officers will patrol Portishead and the Gordano Valley, targeting youngsters riding mopeds, scooters, off-road motorbikes, gopeds and buzzboards.
In March, 32 out of 50 nuisance complaints received by police were related to these types of vehicles. Concerns included noise and unlawful use of the machines on bridleways, footpaths, parks and private land. There were also complaints about vehicles carrying pillion passengers without crash helmets on the highway.
Sensible and responsible with insurance
Pc Tracey Payne said: "The routes through the Gordano Valley lend themselves to off-road biking and in the main most young people who use these trails, do so in a sensible and responsible way.
"We are not trying to spoil anyone's fun but the number of complaints received indicate the effect that some of these riders are having on their community."
By law, moped riders must be 16 and over, have a valid driving licence for that class of vehicle, insurance, and the vehicle must be registered and taxed. Gopeds, buzzboards and electric scooters can only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner.
