Young driver faces £7,500 legal fees after pleading innocent 15 times

The high price of car insurance for young drivers means it's never far from the minds of most young motorists. Few of us can look at a motor insurance quote without swallowing and many find it a real struggle to keep up with our premiums.

But for 20-year-old Ryan Williams, a young driver car insurance policy costing a few hundred pounds is a drop in the ocean compared to another, more pressing driving expense.

Williams, a council worker from Cardiff, has to pay £7,500 in legal costs after appealing unsuccessfully against a £60 parking fine.

The £280-a-week clerk was so sure of his innocence he took his case before magistrates a total of 15 times, which is how he ran up the massive solicitor's bill.

"I feel huge sympathy," said Anthony O'Callaghan, the lawyer who took on Williams' case. "His point of principal cost him dearly."

It also cost the taxpayer somewhere in the region of £35,000 once police time, admin costs and court fees had been accounted for.

"15 times?" said Mike Page, Hoot spokesman and an acknowledged expert on car insurance for young drivers. "To misquote the Clash: "he fought the law and the law won"."
