The AA have urged motorists to check the fine print in their insurance policies before they travel to Europe. All UK car insurance policies cover drivers for third party accidents in Europe but they will not necessarily be comprehensively covered.
Without the comprehensive cover, drivers who have accidents abroad will have to pay the costs of removing the car, even if the accident was not their fault.
The United Nations Economic D showed that in 2004 the European countries with the highest number of non-fatal traffic accidents per thousand vehicles are Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Croatia and Belgium. According to their statistics, the safest European countries to drive in are Romania, Andorra and Finland.
