Government plans that could help keep down the cost of young driver car insurance by training and testing learner drivers more effectively have been welcomed by the Association of British Insurers.
But the ABI - the trade association for Britain's insurance industry - said the moves were just a first step and called for more action to stop young people being killed and injured on UK roads.
ABI general insurance and health director, Nick Starling, was pleased that ministers were listening to insurance industry concerns, especially with an eye on young driver car insurance.
But he said, "More needs to be done to save young lives, particularly around a structured minimum learning period, and passenger restrictions for young newly qualified drivers."
A consultation arranged by the Government is now underway and the ABI will work with ministers and civil servants to tackle industry concerns.
Mr Starling said: "We will work with the Government during the consultation process on measures to ensure that today's young novice drivers become tomorrow's mature motorists."
Risk of death and injury in car accidents on Britain's roads are a major concern for the ABI, not least because many motorists these days are looking for cheap young driver car insurance.
