Officials in Greece have announced that up to 10 percent of car accidents can be blamed on raunchy billboard advertisements on the roadside, making them a significant threat to cheap car insurance in the country.
The claim follows an £8 million lawsuit brought against the Greek state by a man who claims the distraction caused his son's death in a road accident.
"They are death traps," he said.
Many of the thousands of ads for cigarettes, perfume and underwear are put up without the permission of local authorities. In Athens alone, there are thought to be 15,000 illegal billboards, and now Greek city councils have been ordered to take them all down.
"Advertising is meant to be eye-catching, but a good driver shouldn't let billboards distract him or her from the road ahead," said Mike Page, spokesman for the cheap car insurance specialists at Hoot.
"However, illegal activities mustn't be tolerated - regardless of their impact on motor insurance quotes in the country," he added.
