Young driver charged after reversing across the outback

Stunned highway police in Western Australia pulled over a 23-year-old who passed their patrol car at 30mph - because he was driving in reverse gear.

The driver, who was trying to cover the 300-mile trip from Kalgoorlie to Perth, explained that his transmission had failed and he had no choice but make the journey in reverse.

He admitted to driving as fast as 50mph earlier in the day but had struggled to avoid swerving off the road at that speed.

Police promptly charged him with reckless driving. If the charge is upheld in court, he could well see a hike in young driver car insurance premiums.

That's on top of the hefty garage bill it'll take to get his car going in both directions again.

Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot, said: "What kind of man sets off on a 300-mile road trip in a car that only drives backwards?"

"Forget the car - this guy's brain is running in reverse gear," he added. "He'll be lucky to get any kind of car insurance if he's convicted, let alone cheap car insurance."
