According to a motor cover comparison website, motorists in many regions of the UK have seen an increase in the cost of their young drivers insurance policies over the past 12 months.
The most substantial yearly rises affected drivers in Bradford and Manchester. They were paying almost 15% more than in the previous year.
Drivers in Scottish cities such as Edinburgh and Dundee had reason to be cheerful as cheap car insurance became more readily available north of the border.
A spokesperson for the price comparison website said, "This time last year drivers were paying an eye watering £804 average premium for comprehensive cover, which has continued to rise to £848 over the past 12 months.
"In 2012 we can expect to see new factors affecting car insurance prices, such as the introduction of EU legislation due at the end of this year meaning that insurance cannot be priced according to gender.
"We will also see new technologies affecting car insurance prices such as black box technology which allows insurers to offer discounts to drivers who can prove that they are careful behind the wheel"
People planning on taking to the wheel in the 2012 will be hoping that the government listens to demands made by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to secure discounts for the successful completion of advanced driver training courses.
