Cheap cover can be found for young Welsh drivers
Safety experts deplore uninsured drivers and are urging young Welsh motorists to seek out cheap car insurance rather than run the risk of heavy penalties.
New statistics reveal that more than 41,000 motorists in South Wales have no car insurance, with Splott in Cardiff clocking up the highest rate of cover dodgers, where 16% of all vehicles are uninsured.
According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau the number of uninsured drivers in South Wales has increased by approximately 10,000 in the past year.
Sheila Rainger, deputy director of the RAC foundation, said, "The credit crunch is certainly part of it. The price of a vehicle can be quite low and cars are much more affordable these days.
"The problem is that when people buy a car they often don't take into account the costs of keeping it legal.
"What a lot of people don't realise is that insurance isn't for them - it's to protect the people they may injure or kill in an accident."
Uninsured drivers are being targeted with the aid of automatic number plate recognition cameras that quickly determine whether a car is insured by linking to a database. Under new laws introduced in 2005 police officers now have on-the-spot power to seize uninsured vehicles.
Chairwoman Joy Smith of campaign group Road Safety Wales said, "Unfortunately, there is still a small minority of drivers who fail to heed the warnings and these are then dealt with by our partners the police."
A Hoot spokesperson said, "As an online car insurance provider Hoot is able to provide cheap car insurance quotes for young drivers. Avoiding motor cover is not worth the risk."
