ABD claims smoking ban won't produce cheap car insuranceCalls to prohibit smoking at the wheel from the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association (LARSOA) have been met with derision from another motoring body, the Association of British Drivers (ABD). LARSOA has called smoking whilst driving "a dangerous distraction" and asked the government to enforce a ban for the sake of drivers' safety and cheap car insurance premiums. However, ABD has denounced such a move as "ridiculous". According to its chairman, producing bans for every potentially distracting activity (like smoking) not only fails to address the problem of negligent driving, but is also likely to lead to "a massive increase in frivolous prosecutions." He added: "Almost everything on does in a car 'can' be dangerously distracting if not done in a sensible manner." Instead, ABD says a crackdown on irresponsible behaviour at the wheel would be more effective at checking the rising number of accidents and motor insurance claims on UK roads. uSwitch.com has revealed that some motor insurance firms reward drivers who don't smoke with cheap car insurance rates - so it's well worth giving-up even if the ban doesn't go through.
