Young drivers insurance holders are among those being targeted in a campaign to reduce the number of road accidents involving motorcyclists.
The Think! campaign is designed to raise awareness of the risks faced by people who travel by motorbike.
The organisers have pointed out that this minority group of road users account for one-fifth of the deaths on British roads, with a substantial number of accidents occurring at junctions and crossroads.
The Road Safety Minister said, "Britain has some of the safest roads in the world but around nine motorcyclists were still killed on the roads each week in 2009.
"As a biker I know how much fun motorcycling can be and what a practical way it is to get around, but it is unacceptable that so many motorcyclists are dying on our roads and I want to tackle this."
Over three quarters of the bikers who either lost their lives or were severely injured two years ago crashed into cars. In many instances the driver had failed to notice the motorcyclist.
It is thought that fewer young persons car insurance claims would be made if bikers were to wear brightly coloured clothing and always used their lights, even during the day. Motorcyclists have also been advised to resist the temptation to overtake before junctions.
Motorists should keep their full concentration on the road and avoid pulling out unless they are absolutely sure that it is safe to do so, if they want to keep their no claims young drivers insurance bonus intact.
