Male drivers responsible for insurance claims

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), men are more likely than women to be involved in car crashes which often lead to young drivers insurance claims.

The influential organisation revealed that men are at twice the risk of crashing their vehicles, due to irresponsible driving behaviour. However, despite being more prone to crashing their motors, men are apparently highly confident in their driving ability.

A significant proportion of men openly admitted to breaking the speed limit when road conditions were hazardous. Many were also prepared to risk their lives and the invalidation of their cheap car insurance by getting behind the wheel after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.

A large number of drivers claimed that they could have avoided an accident if they had, had more experience.

The Chief Executive of the IAM said, "These results show that we need to look at the psychology of male drivers to reduce risky behaviour and over-confidence, but for both sexes accidents could be easily reduced by improving driver skills and lives could be saved."

Many road safety experts believe that fewer young drivers insurance claims would be made if novice motorists were required to take further training. People who take Pass Plus lessons or an equivalent course also stand a far better chance of obtaining affordable cover.
