Even boy racers need young drivers car insurance
Boy racers and those who drive without young drivers insurance are being targeted by Staffordshire traffic cops after street racers from Burntwood, near Cannock, have continued to flout safe driving regulations in the area.
In 2008, a young driver was arrested in Burntwood after power sliding around a traffic island. He was jailed for 13 months for dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without valid car insurance. He was also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
In January 2009, a 23-year-old appeared before magistrates having been arrested for similar power sliding exploits in March last year. He was charged with dangerous driving.
Pleading guilty to the charge, the young driver was banned for 12 months and ordered to pay more than £600 in fines and costs.
The police officer in charge of the investigation said, "We hope the positive police action and that of the court sends out a very clear message that irresponsible and dangerous driving will not be tolerated.
"Our message to these drivers is they are putting themselves and other road users at significant risk of serious injury and we will take whatever action is necessary to but the brakes on such activities."
As well as clamping down on those without young drivers insurance, the police at Burntwood have issued on-the-spot fines for driving offences such as not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving, speeding, obstructing the highway, having no MOT certificate and driving with faulty vehicle lights.
