The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has recently said that young driver insurance holders should buy modern cars with a high safety rating.
The UK's leading road safety charity pointed out that almost 50% of males involved in serious accidents before their 20th birthday were driving around in vehicles aged older than 10 years.
According to IAM, drivers with old motors stand an increased chance of having to make a young persons car insurance claim, because their cars don't have the same safety features as newer alternatives.
One of the leading UK insurance providers has also revealed that inexperienced drivers will generally take more care when driving expensive cars, meaning that they are less likely to have an accident.
Neil Greig, IAM Director of Policy and Research, said, "It makes sense that any driver will take better care of a new car, and especially one which they're still paying for. Young drivers are the highest risk group on our roads and the insurance industry claims that 20 per cent of young drivers crash in their first year.
"Parents should help their child choose the best car they can get for their money. A new car won't be an option for everybody but there are plenty of used cars that will be almost as good – you do need to do some thorough research though."
There are a number of factors which people with young driver insurance should take into consideration when purchasing their first vehicle, according to the IAM. It is always worth ensuring that prospective purchases have an NCAP rating higher than three and it is also advisable to search for cars with a lengthy manufacturer's warranty.
