Young driver car insurance news 12/05/2008
Sports car dangers for teenagersA fatal car accident has highlighted the dangers of teenagers driving sports-type vehicles, as well as the need for young driver car insurance. Calls for young drivers to be banned from driving cars with powerful engines were made by a son in mourning after the death of his father in the road crash. The elderly father, aged 70, was killed in Pangbourne when his Rover Metro was hit by a Mini Cooper driven by an 18-year-old student driver. At an inquest, the coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death but highlighting that the teenager had been driving too fast for his motoring skill. The inquest heard also that the Mini suffered a puncture from a nail that led to the teenager losing control. The dead man's son made a plea for the law to be made tougher for teenage drivers because it was clear that some of them, at least, could not safely handle more powerful cars. He said his father would still be alive today if young drivers were banned from driving cars with engines larger than 1200cc. After the accident, the teenager was arrested allegedly for dangerous driving. However, the criminal case was dropped after evidence showed the puncture had happened. He may still face a significant rise in his young driver car insurance premium.
