Students killed in high speed crash

A coroner delivered a moving speech at an inquest into the deaths of four Irish teenagers, including a couple who may have had student car insurance, in Co Kerry last year.

The respected public official said that speed limiters should now be fitted to the vehicles of any motorists aged under 25.

His comments followed a recount of the events leading up to the car crash. The sole survivor said that the car had been driven so quickly that it began to hop around on the road, before careering into a tree.

The coroner believes that by kitting cars out with speed limiters it would be possible to reduce the chances of such incidents happening in the future.

His claims were backed up by a Co Kerry solicitor, who pointed out that a voluntary programme was already in place.

This scheme offers young drivers' insurance holders, who've committed a motoring offence, the option of having the speed limiting devices fitted upon their cars.

The legal professional said that the programme has proved reasonably successful in curbing the speed of student car insurance holders. He is of the opinion that the authorities should seriously consider taking the appeal further.
