Beware the month of November
Car insurance companies in the UK consistently find November to be the busiest month of the year.
In November 2006, motor insurance companies across Britain experienced a surge in the number of accident claims made on policies during the month. According to online car insurance body esure, during 2006 there were 130,000 more claims in November made than in October of the same year.
Such a rise can seem anomalous, at least without an analysis of the seasonal phenomena affecting the period.
Some professional drivers talk of "November glare". For such bright autumn light, road safety experts suggest motorists carry a quality pair of sunglasses
High rainfall also contributes to making November an accident-prone month. Frosty and foggy mornings are further road safety hazards familiar to November, so in reflection it is easy to see why car insurance companies handle so many claims.
Although this might explain why the month is accident prone, it does not explain why it should consistently be the peak month each year for motor insurance claims. It can be argued that other months are equally affected by seasonal environmental factors.
Mike Page, spokesperson with UK online car insurance company Hoot, comments, "All of autumn and winter experience cold, rainy, foggy and dark conditions so there seems to be no particular reason why car insurance claims should peak so unerringly most Novembers.
However, we would advise all road users to take whatever precautions they can throughout this autumn period. It is always a good time to get your car serviced as anything that minimises risk will contribute to keeping the numbers of accidents down."
