New drivers may switch to auto pilot mode

There may be a reduction in the number of claims made by people with car insurance for new drivers if Volkswagen's auto pilot system is integrated within new car models.

The German manufacturer has revealed that the recently developed technology allows drivers to cruise the open roads without having to manually turn the steering wheel or press the pedals.

Companies specialising in young persons car insurance may choose to offer discounts to drivers of the automated vehicles, which right themselves instead of veering out of control and come to a stop whenever obstructions are detected.

A spokesperson for Volkswagen said, "What we have achieved is an important milestone on the path towards fully automated and accident-free driving.

"One conceivable scenario for its initial use might be monotonous driving situations, for example, in traffic jams or on routes that are exceedingly speed limited.

"Nonetheless, the driver always retains driving responsibility and is always in control. The driver can override or deactivate the system at any time and must continually monitor it."

Although this automated system may reduce the number of road accidents in the UK, whether motorists will have the confidence to hand complete control of their vehicle to an on-board computer remains to be seen.
